shape

Shape

Definition

Shape - is a flat, enclosed area of an artwork created through lines, textures, colours or an area enclosed by other shapes for example triangles circles and squares.
Form - can refer to a three-dimensional composition or object within a three-dimensional composition that relies on light.
Negative space - in art, is the space around and between the subject(s) of an image. Negative space may be most evident when the space around a subject, not the subject itself, forms an interesting or artistically relevant shape, and such space occasionally is used to artistic effect as the "real" subject of an image.
Geometric shapes - such as circles, triangles or squares have perfect, uniform measurements and don't often appear in nature
Irregular - without symmetry, even shape or formal arrangement.

Artist research

Andy Goldsworthy (born 26 July 1956) is a British sculptor, photographer and environmentalist who produces site-specific sculptures and land art situated in natural and urban settings. He lives and works in Scotland.

William Eggleston (born July 27, 1939) is an American Photographer. He is widely credited with increasing recognition for colour photography as a legitimate artistic medium to display in art galleries. As a boy, Eggleston was introverted; he enjoyed playing the piano, drawing, and working with electronics. From an early age, he was also drawn to visual media, and reportedly enjoyed buying postcards and cutting out pictures from magazines.

image bank

These images are taken by the artists  i decided to research, i chose these images for my image bank as i feel they show a different medium to the formal element of shape, and i feel i could recreate these images with my own style, or create new ideas formulated around these images.

This image is a good portrayal shapes that are created by nature, the use of this image being in black and white almost highlights the different shapes by enhancing the shadows and highlights of the image, this picture also shows how in nature no shape is 'perfect' as each one is different but they all lead to the same thing, another layer of the hole.

i feel that this image was manipulated through photoshop, i think that the artist enhanced the hue of the circular part of the image to create their own shape, this mage could also be used to show the contrast between the seasons as the leaves within the circle look more 'alive' than the others due to their lighter and bolder look when compared to the surrounding leaves.

i like this image as it almost leaves the shape creating to your imagination as different people may relate different cloud formations to different objects and when one person is making out a cloud to look like one shape, another could be relating it to something entirely different.

i also like this image for the same reasons as the previous, i feel that this image is still very different to the previous as it shows lots of different clouds that all look similar but each has a different unique shape to the next.

best images, out of all my unedited images i thought these were the best...

edited images

To edit the above two images, i first altered the curves, brightness, contrast and the levels of the images, i then created another layer of the image and changed it to black and white, i then further altered the curves, brightness, contrast and the levels of black and white copy of the original images, i then used the elliptical marquee tool to create an outline of a large circle on the B&W layer of the images, once i was happy with the positioning of the circle, i used the eraser tool to delete the B&W area of the selected circle, once i had done this, it revealed the colour underneath, i then flattened the images by merging all the layers and further altering the curves, brightness, contrast and the levels of the final images.

To edit this image i altered the curves, brightness, contrast and the levels of the image, i felt by doing this i accentuated the different styles of shape that the shell showed. After i had done this i altered the saturation and vibrance of the image to highlight its features. To complete my image, i did a final alter to the shadows and highlights of the image. To improve my image further i would've ensured that the studio background was clean as you can see some dust on the backdrop.

To edit the above image, i first altered the curves, brightness, contrast and the levels of the image, i then created another layer of the image and changed it to black and white, i then further altered the curves, brightness, contrast and the levels of black and white copy of the original image, i then used an google image of a triangle on a separate layer of the image, as there was no triangular marquee tool on photoshop, and used the magic wand tool to select the inside of the triangle, on the B&W layer of the images, once i was happy with the positioning of the triangle i deleted the layer of the triangle so that the triangular shape was selected on the black and white layer, i then used the eraser tool to delete the B&W area of the selected triangle, once i had done this, it revealed the colour underneath, i then flattened the images by merging all the layers and further altering the curves, brightness, contrast and the levels of the final images. i felt that this edit was my own take on Andy Goldsworthy's own work but also using William Eggleston's style of photography as well.

To complete my image, i did a final alter to the shadows and highlights of the image.

I really like the above image for various reasons, one of which is the shadows that were created within the image, as due to my camera angle and positioning, the use of my flash created 2 lined shadows which almost made it look like the model car was on a road, also the shadow of the car i feel helped accentuate the shapeof the model car and its future, to create this final image, i altered the curves, brightness, contrast and the levels of the image.
images that require improvement

i felt this image was over exposed and made the globe look dirty and the background looked grainy

i felt this image was taken at the wrong angle and has had a negative impact on the overall outcome of the image, also the backdrop looks grainy again

I felt this image was taken too far away from the subject, in overall my experimentation with a dark background didn't work out well as my images turned out grainy.

in overall, i have discovered that my images look better and more professional on a white backdrop than a black backdrop.

AO1: Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding.

(Here you will discuss how you developed your work based on your research of e.g. artists/photographers, etc).

(It is important that you show a progression of your work… which may mean revisiting a subject area and adding additional images showing a development of your ideas or refinement of the final images through).

The artist research was very useful during these shoots as I had some inspiration on how to tackle the method of creating and capturing patterns. My research of Andy Goldsworthy and William Eggleston helped me to focus on the details of the shapes and to also manipulate my images to create shapes. I found this helpful because I have a lot of opportunities to photograph different shapes and also find places where i could photograph and further create shapes using editing on photoshop. At first i was going to use Goldsworthy alone for the inspiration of my images, but when i discovered Eggleston's work, i decided to merge their ideas and creations together which helped me develop my work further and find a deeper insight within using shapes in photography.

AO3: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress.

My idea for recording shape was to photograph the finer details in nature, and find how shape can present itself. I was inspired by Andy Goldsworthy's and William Egglestons work, in the way that they both created the images by manipulating nature With reference to my best images, I feel that although I could not create photographs exactly like Andy Goldsworthy's and William Egglestons work, I did create a set that was in the style of their work. I am happy with the overall outcome of my images and feel that they all show the many ways that a shape can be captured.
With regards to some of the images that did not come out as I expected, I struggled to adapt my camera settings as I was unfamiliar with how to take pictures using the studio box . Some images lacked focus, whilst in the case of others I struggled to use the black background as it appeared grainy.   I believe I can overcome these issues through more practise and experience using the studio box.

To edit these two images, i first altered the curves, brightness, contrast and the levels of the images, i then created another layer of the image and changed it to black and white, i then further altered the curves, brightness, contrast and the levels of black and white copy of the original images, i then used the elliptical marquee tool to create an outline of a large circle on the B&W layer of the images, once i was happy with the positioning of the circle, i used the eraser tool to delete the B&W area of the selected circle, once i had done this, it revealed the colour underneath, i then flattened the images by merging all the layers and further altering the curves, brightness, contrast and the levels of the final images.

(descriptions of how i edited the other images are underneath them in my 'edited images' section)

AO2Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops.

I used my iPhone 8 to take these images, shutter speed 1/480sec, f/1.8, ISO 20 with the flash on for the images in my studio. When taking some of my images i used a 'Folding Portable Lightbox Mini Photo Studio Small Shooting Box Photography Lighting Tent Kit' which i bought to enhance my images. By using the light box, my images look cleaner and the use of a completely plain back drop and LED lights mean that my images can also have a high level of detail, the only problem with it is that it is hard to take images using my camera and the box, hence why my images have been taken with my phone, yet they still show detail as my phone camera can use low apertures and with a smaller aperture, less light passes through. This also meant i could take better images of smaller objects.

AO4: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.

(At the end of the entry you will discuss whether you have produced a personal and meaningful response, this means  (are my images creative/relevant to the subject area studied/connected and influenced by any research undertaken).

i believe that I have produced a strong series of images inspired by my research of shape and the artists Andy Goldsworthy and William Eggleston. The final images were refined by altering the curves, brightness, contrast and the levels of the images, for the more complex edits i have described how i got the final images in my 'edited images' section. With the majority of my images i created my own take on Andy Goldsworthy's own work but also using William Eggleston's style of photography.
