Portfolio: photo-genres
A portfolio is an edited collection of an artists bast work intended to showcase an artists style and/or method of work.
In my opinion a successful portfolio both expresses and displays an artist's personality and showcases various presentation materials that both represent the artist and their work which also links to a theme of their choice. it also needs to have a consistent style in terms of editing and link to the subject of formal elements while showcasing an artists best work. The work also has to be aesthetic ("the pleasant, positive or artful appearance of a person or a thing"). My aim for this shoot is to photograph urban and city landscapes and create colour splashes like the below image where the bus stands out but the landscape still draws attention.
Images to be taken between 24.01.19 and 10.03.19.
Theme- the urban landscape
Artist research
Nicholas "Nico" Goodden is a London based urban photographer and cinema-graph maker. His work has been featured in publications such as the Huffington Post, The Phoblographer, World Photo Org. His use of colour has inspired me to base my portfolio off of his work.
image bank
this a selection of images that my shoot will be inspired by the following images:
contact sheet(s)
Best images (this consists of both original images and edited images)
AO3: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress.
My idea for recording a this portfolio was to base my work off the images in my image bank and the concept they portray as well as Nico Goodden's photos.
With reference to my best images, I feel that although I could not create photographs exactly like my image bank photos or Goodden's work, I did create a set that was in the style their work but also relates to my previous work. I am happy with the overall outcome of my images and feel that they all show the many ways that a documentary can be captured.
With regards to some of the images that did not come out as I expected, I struggled to adapt my camera settings as I was unfamiliar with how the camera worked and was also in places which were extremely crowded . Some images lacked focus, whilst in the case of others I struggled to use the cameras exposure meter. I believe I can overcome these issues through more practise and if i had placed myself in situations that weren't as packed with people as some of the popular landmarks are.
AO2: Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops.
All images were taken using a FUJIFILM FinePix S9500,with the shutter speed at 1/470 of a second, f4.5 and ISO 80. I tried to increase the aperture setting to as high as possible so that I can have a sharper picture with a wider depth of field, however in some cases this was not possible as the lighting was poor and i could not get as much distance from the subject(s) as i aspired to.

the selective colour editing process:
AO4: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.
i feel that i have produced a strong portfolio, all consistent with the theme of colour within an urban landscape, the following final images were edited using either the process shown above, or simply by editing the brightness, contrast, hue and saturation.
