Movement
Definition and Theory
Movement is the act of moving, in simple words, movement can be captured in many ways.
- movement is happening all the time
- movement can be in any direction
- movement can portray emotions
- movement can be used to reflect personalities
- small movements can show shyness and tranquility
- large movements can show loudness and
Movement is the act of objects or people moving between two or more positions.
Freeze frame: A freeze frame is a motionless image produced from a single frame.
Motion blur: A motion blur is the streaking of moving objects in a photograph, it is produced when an image being recorded changes due to the recording or a single exposure, which is due to a long exposure or a rapid movement by the subjects or surroundings of the image.
Digital SLR cameras
A digital single-lens reflex camera is a camera that combines the optics and mechanisms of an SLR camera with a digital imaging sensor, as opposed to photographic film used with traditional cameras. DSLR cameras work by the light of the object being photographed zooming in on the camera lens, the incoming image then hits the image sensor chip of the camera which causes the image to break up into millions of pixels, the sensor then measures the colour and brightness of each individual pixel and stores it as a number, essentially the digital photograph that is created is a long line of numbers coding for the exact details of each pixel of the photograph produced.
The shutter speeds of DSLR cameras can vary yet most can handle shutter speeds of up to 1/4000th of a second yet some have the capability to capture images at 1/8000th of a second, maybe even faster. The shorter the shutter speed, the sharper the image. therefore if an image is taken with a longer shutter speed the image will appear blurred where objects have moved during the time that the shutter has been open. Here are some visual examples that I have included that show motion within images
Research of artists
Shin T-
Shin T is a lesser known photographer who takes images of busy streets and motorways using a long shutter speed to create images like the ones below:
The above images show the head lights and brake lights of cars travelling along busy roads. These images are created by adjusting the shutter speed of a camera so it is open for longer, capturing more light. They were captured by slowing the shutter speed of the camera which allows the camera to capture more movement and light.
Image bank
The following images were added as part of my visual research.
This above collection of photographs by other unknown artists represent some of the types of images that i felt i could recreate within Harlow and the surrounding areas. They represent a variety of movement, most of the images use light movement and shot during the night or with a dark backdrop.
Contact Sheets
Camera settings for all images-f3, shutter speed was 15 seconds, ISO 200 to 300, all these images were taken on bonfire night and either in a garden or on a public field.
Best images/ edited images
i felt that these three images below were my best images so i then edited all 3 into one and altered the hue of each to add a range of colours.
images that require improvement
these images all require improvement as due to a lack of a fully functioning tripod, the camera moved too much while the images were being taken, which resulted in them being extremely blurred, to improve these images, i would take them again using a tripod or table to stand the camera on.
AO1: Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding.
(Here you will discuss how you developed your work based on your research of e.g. artists/photographers, etc).
(At the end of the entry you will discuss whether you have produced a personal and meaningful response, this means (are my images creative/relevant to the subject area studied/connected and influenced by any research undertaken).
I feel that my work was very much based off of Shin T's concepts of light and movement and my research of his art helped my recreate my own images, and the use of different coloured lights helped my create my own images with different colours which helped them ( the different light patterns) stand out more: i did this by changing the hue of the images, as well as the colour balance
(It is important that you show a progression of your work… which may mean revisiting a subject area and adding additional images showing a development of your ideas or refinement of the final images through).
AO3: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress.
My idea for recording movement was to photograph the different movements that can be created with light,With reference to my best selected images: i feel that these images link to the topic and to the artist that I studied. I also feel like the work in which I have shown my focus on colour and light. I feel like my images show my interpretation on movement, however I do consider the fact that they are not entirely in the style of Shin T
AO2: Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops.
Camera settings for all images-f3, shutter speed was 15 seconds, ISO 200 to 300, all these images were taken on bonfire night and either in a garden or on a public field. Whilst on the shoots I played around with the aperture and shutter speeds on the camera, trying to create some interesting images but as my images that i thought required improvement show, experimenting doesn't always have the best outcomes.
AO4: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.
I believe that I have produced a strong series of images inspired by my research of colour, exploring the movement involving light and the images of Shin T. The final images produced were refined by developing the photo in photoshop using a range of techniques.
